President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday concluded his visit to Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, to participate in the third iteration of the public forum session 'Jazeera Holhuashi'.
The first 'Jazeera Holhuashi' to be held outside of the capital area, the event focussed on the theme of increasing profit from the fisheries sector.
The president listened to concerns and suggestions raised by Thinadhoo's fisher community, which included:
- Lack of proper information about the government-spearheaded 'Masveriya Card' (Fisherman's Card) and fisheries loans
- Discontinued services of Horizon Fisheries in Hoadedhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll
- Mixed opinions on the employment of expatriate workers on fishing boats
- Need to ensure long term profits from fisheries
- Need for import duty waiver on materials and equipments imported for the fisheries industy
President Solih, Vice President Faisal Naseem and Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Zaha Waheed, received the concerns and vowed that the government will hold discussions and take the necessary steps to bring about desired changes and solutions.
Over the course of the weekend trip, the president also visited the Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital, where he met with hospital employees and officials to discuss challenges such as as scarcity of medical supplies, facilities and professionals, and suggestions for future development. President Solih assured that his government was closely monitoring the progress of the medical sector, highlighting that Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital is one of five selected for an extensive advancement programme.
The president additionally took a tour of Thinadhoo's powerhouse and waste management centre, as well Maldives Industrial Fisheries (MIFCO)'s ice plant.
Furthermore, he participated in a Tree Planting Campaign launched by the island's former Councillor Saud Ali, to help reduce the effects of soil erosion and increase awareness. Expressing his support for the cause, the president and Fisheries Minister Zaha both planted coconut palm seedlings.
President Solih also met with some councillors and senior officials of government institutions of the island.
