Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Wednesday congratulated the Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs Dinesh Gunawardena, on being reappointed to office.
“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations and warm wishes on behalf of the Government of Maldives and on my own behalf as you reassume office and continue your tenure", said Minister Shahid.
"Together, our two countries are charting a new course in our bilateral cooperation, exploring new areas and strengthening existing avenues. I am confident that with your experience and extensive knowledge of Maldives-Sri Lanka relations, our work will move forward with renewed vigour and dynamism".
The minister also conveyed gratitude for the incumbent's efforts in "fortifying the historic relations between our countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally".
Sri Lanka's Election Commission previously announced that ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) won the majority of parliamentary seats during the recent election bid.
In total, SLPP secured 145 of the 225 parliamentary seats, just five short from a supermajority
Since Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's younger brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the presidential elections last November, Sri Lankans have largely embraced the Rajapaksa family's strong political foothold.
Gotabaya's new 26 cabinet ministers were sworn in on Wednesday, and is expected to convene on Thursday, to deliberate on constitutional amendments and the budget.
