An amendment has been submitted to the Legal Profession Act to remove the Attorney General (AG) from the Executive Committee of the Bar Council.
The Bar Council's Executive Committee currently has nine members. These are the Attorney General, President and Vice President elected from amongst lawyers, and an additional six members.
The bill submitted by People's National Congress MP Hussain Shareef said that the amendment of removing the AG is being proposed so as to ensure the absolute independence of the Bar Council.
The bill proposes that the composition of the Bar Council include the President, Vice President, and seven other members.
Another amendment in the bill relates to the attestation of documents issued by registered educational institutes, as well as official documents issued to citizens being attested by diplomatic missions in foreign countries in the instance they are to be used in the relative foreign country.
The first hearing of the bill was conducted in today's parliament sitting.
