Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) on Thursday announced that positive cases for COVID-19 were detected on the islands of Dhaandhoo and Villingili in Gaafu Alif Atoll.

The centre revealed that the new cases, two in Dhaandhoo and one in Villingili, were connected to the recent outbreak on Dhevvadhoo in the same atoll.

Dhaandhoo and Villingili are currently under monitoring status, prohibiting all travel to and from the two islands.

HEOC added that contact tracing efforts were underway.

Later the same day, HEOC also urged any individuals that travelled via Gaafu Alif's atoll ferry 'Koimalaa 4' on January 9, 2021, to report to the nearest health centre as soon as possible, and self-quarantine until January 21. The centre noted that action was in relation to a positive case detected from Dhaandhoo.

HEOC placed Dhevvadhoo under monitoring last Thursday after a number of individuals who travelled from capital Male’ to the island tested positive for the virus. Subsequently, Fonadhoo and Gan in the same atoll were also placed under monitoring after four individuals who travelled to Fonadhoo from Dhevvadhoo tested positive.

According to local media Mihaaru, the number of active cases in Dhevvadhoo is presently over 30.

Meanwhile, HEOC maintains its instruction for any persons who travelled out of Dhevvadhoo after November 30, 2020, to undergo a COVID-19 test as soon as possible, from the closest health facility or flu clinic, and self-quarantine until they receive negative results.

The centre also requested travellers who left Dhevvadhoo after December 25, 2020, to undergo testing, in addition to completing a 14-day quarantine starting from the day they departed from the island.

At present, Maldives records a total of 14,277 virus cases of which 783 are active cases, in addition to 13,438 recoveries and 49 deaths.
