The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will continue to operate bus services in Vilimalé alongside Malé City Council's buggy service, and whether two services should run simultaneously on the island is up to the government to decide, MTCC CEO and MD Adam Azim said.

MTCC started its bus services in Vilimalé in January, while the Malé City Council recently transported buggies to the island to begin their buggy service.

The council had earlier lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that MTCC had transported the buses to Vilimalé without their permission.

Azim told Mihaaru News that the government had awarded the contract to MTCC to operate the bus service in Vilimalé as the transportation problem on the island had not been resolved for a long time.

"In Vilimalé, MTCC has tackled a long-standing problem. It does not appear that the government will ask us to stop providing a service that has helped the people," Azim said.

When asked if it was feasible for two companies to provide public transport services on a small island geographically separated from Malé, Azim said that as the service provider, MTCC will continue to provide the service until the government decides otherwise.

"A decision will be made by the government. We are the service provider, and we will continue to provide this service until the government decides to discontinue it. I doubt the government will make such a decision,"Azim said.

The Malé City Council has announced free buggy services until the end of Ramadan and Fitr Eid, but Malé City Mayor Mohamed Muizzu has not commented on the two public transport services in Vilimalé.
