The first session of the final Parliament term of the year is scheduled to commence on Monday.

The first sitting of the third session will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 21. The agenda for the meeting is yet to be finalized.

The second session of the parliament ended amidst disruptions, with regular parliamentary meetings not being held right before Eid Al-Adha. Important scheduled work was not attended to during this period, followed by the parliament going on leave on June 22.

Since then, two additional sittings have been held outside the regular term at the request of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).

The unfinished work could not be addressed in the first extraordinary meeting, and matters related to the standing committees were finalized during the second meeting.

The parliament proceedings were brought to a halt when MDP, holding a majority in the parliament, introduced a no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla. As they declined to take on the role of the chair, two sittings in the second session had to be canceled due to the absence of a presiding member. This marked the first time such an event had occurred in the history of Maldives.
