Minister of Economic Development Mr. Fayyaz Ismail has publicly shown support to re-electing Mr. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for a second presidential term.

Although the minister had shown support for a second presidential term of Mr. Solih, the Maldives statesman had not made any official comments over a decision to run for presidency in the 2023 elections.

President Solih has maintained his deflective tactics in front of the media, opting to discussing on fulfilling the campaign pledges instead of voicing a decision for the presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Minister Mr. Ismail's comments of endorsement came amid a recent campaign trip to Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru.

He visited the island to campaign for the internal election of the ruling party to elect its chairperson, in which he is competing against North-Maafannu MP Mr. Imthiyaz Fahmy.

Earlier, the Parliament Speaker and former Maldives President, who is a founding member of MDP had stated he was willing to run for presidency in the upcoming elections, should it be the party's decision.

The former president made the comments while giving an interview to an international media outlet.

Meanwhile, ruling party is currently split in half forming two factions with President Solih leading one of them and Nasheed leading the other. The factions have been clashing intensively over the chairperson position due to the designation's crucial political leverage.

Fayyaz had spoken in detail about the challenges faced by incumbent President, Mr. Solih after he received the ruling party's political backing to run in the elections.

Furthermore, Mr. Solih had been running the government while facing extensive hurdles from within the ruling party itself.

Fayyaz had also spoken in great length about the importance of the involvement of the party's general members, while addressing the relative inactiveness of the political party in recent years.

He affirmed to revitalize the democratic spirit and strength of the party once again upon getting elected as MDP's next chairperson.
