Econ Minister claims opposition collusion possible in internal elections

The incumbent Minister of Economic Development and the MDP Chairperson-hopeful, Mr. Fayyaz Ismail has made serious allegations over Maldives opposition's collusion within the ruling party.

Mr. Ismail who is gunning for the chairperson's seat in MDP claims that due to the hierarchical structure and expansive number of members, the opposing PPM has stronger chances of colluding with MDP's internal election results.

During his campaign trip to Alif Dhaal atoll Mahibadhoo, the minister questioned about the integrity of its members, while further emphasizing on the importance of identifying actual party supporters or sympathizers.

It was reported that a total of 94,000 members are eligible to cast vote in the upcoming MDP chairperson's election, which is slated for 14th May 2022.

Despite the declared total of eligible voters in MDP, Elections Commission attest that only 54,782 of these are registered voters.

"Close to 20,000 voters [from PPM] have control in maneuvering our internal elections to elect a party president or a presidential candidate," Mr. Fayyaz bemoaned.

The minister had asserted his stance claiming for swift removal of apparent PPM sympathizers from the ruling party's active membership.

Meanwhile, the chairperson campaign is running at intensifying pace with both the Minister of Economic Development and his opponent North-Maafannu MP Mr. Imthiyaz Fahmy outmaneuvering each other to rally support.
