Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has asserted last night that the party would, in no way, work to topple a democratically elected government. He said that, instead, the aim is to hold the government accountable.
In a rally held at the party's hub last night within their preparations for the upcoming 'In defence of the Constitution' major rally planned for Tuesday, Fayyaz highly criticized the incumbent government.
He maintains that the current government's policies are framed in ways that extremely inconvenience the public and called on the government to revert those policies.
Fayyaz accused the ruling party, which holds super majority in parliament, of changing the Constitution as per their whim, stating that this stands against the hard work MDP had previously done towards bringing in the new Constitution in 2008. This is why, he said, the party is now coming out to protect the Constitution.
Fayyaz said that efforts had been made to reason with the government through various mediums and forums, but said that it had all been in vain.
"But this is not how we see it. As we walk on the streets, go to the mosques, go to cafe's, everyone - young and old - say to us that it is time to get these people out of office," Fayyaz said.
"I reply that we do not overthrow governments. We bring people on to the right path. The work we aim to do is to hold the government accountable within the boundaries of the law," Fayyaz said.
Fayyaz said that whether the government has to be held accountable through holding rallies, or through going out on the streets to demonstrate, the party would not hesitate to do so.
