Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail has stated today that the approaching days are a challenging time and that therefore if there is an absence of people inside the parliament who can hold the government accountable, the people will be at a disadvantage.

While at Dharubaaruge to submit the applications of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections, he highlighted that the preceding MDP government had led the country through the challenges of Covid-19 and the financial difficulties caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

He stated that the continuity of the projects without causing inconvenience to the people was conducted with forethought and the maintenance of close relations with foreign countries.

However, what was seen on the first day of President Dr. Mohamed Muizz’s leadership was an initiation of discord towards the country that has endured as the closest ally to Maldives, said MDP.

“It was not easy even when we were ruling. What I see is the people heading towards a difficult and challenging situation in the upcoming days. If there are no opposing members in the parliament to hold the government accountable, the people may face despair,” said Fayyaz, who had served as the Economic Minister during the former government.

“If we hold the majority of the parliament, this incompetent government can be made competent through us. That is the way work can also proceed."

He said that the confidence in this PPM/PNC ruled government has been lost within these two months of their governance. Fayyaz acknowledged the concerns rising amongst the people and further alleged that the President speaks against the pledges he has made, as well.

MDP is contending for 91 out of the total 93 constituencies within the government with the exclusion of Nilandhoo and Eydhafushi constituencies. The party held primaries for 40 constituencies to determine the candidate competing on the MDP ticket as more than one candidate were competing for those seats.
