Police have seized the passport of a Maldivian man who is accused of sexually assaulting a Chinese tourist.

The police have reported that the Criminal Court has issued a travel ban for the man accused of rape at a local resort, prohibiting him from leaving the country.

A 30-year-old man has been accused in the case.

However, police had previously said they had begun investigating this case last Sunday. The man accused of rape is an employee at Ritz Cartlton Maldives Fari Island Resort.

The 26-year-old Chinese woman, who made the allegations, shared on social media that she arrived in the Maldives with a dive group on May 6. Afterward, she chose to stay at the Ritz Carlton Maldives Resort in Kaafu atoll before returning home.

In a lengthy post on Twitter, and also on a Chinese social media platform, the woman stated that she was raped by the butler assigned to her room at the resort. She further added that she had reported the incident to the local police and the Chinese Embassy in Malé about the matter.

She had also shared some documents related to the case on social media, which indicated that the complaint was filed at Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo Police Station last week. Additionally, her medical examination was conducted at the Kaafu Atoll Health Centre.

The Ritz Carlton Resort has stated its full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation into the case.
