Mohamed Jameel, who died in custody, has been buried early this morning without conducting a post mortem.

Following his death, speculation arose on social media with many alleging that he had been a victim of brutality from prison officers. Photos of the deceased are being circulated on social media, with bruises seen on his face and body. Many are accusing that these are signs of violence.

While the funeral was scheduled for after Fajr prayers this morning, Minister of Home Affairs and Technology Ali Ihusan posted on social media X last night that a post mortem will be conducted with the family's permission, and a complete investigation run into the death.

After Jameel's body had been prepared for burial, a large number of police officers went to the Hulhumale' cemetery, and attempted to take his body for post mortem, as is seen in a video on social media.

Meeting resistance, Police were unable to move the body. Minister Ihusan then arrived and spoke with the family. The final decision was to honour the family's wishes, allowing for Jameel to be buried early this morning without conducting a post mortem.

Jameel died in custody in Maafushi Prison while he was being held until the end of trial on charges of violence with a dangerous sharp object.

He was arrested for threatening State Minister at Ministry of Environment Ali Solih with a knife, and earlier for making a commotion at the minbar at the Salman Mosque during Friday prayers.

Earlier, it was revealed that he had been receiving treatment for a mental illness as well.

Corrections Services said that they had noticed Jameel had not come out of his cell and checked on him, finding him lying unmoving in prostration (in sajadat) for a long period. Although CPR was immediately administered, no changes were observed, upon which he was transferred to the Maafushi Health Center at 12:13 hrs.

At 12:45, doctors pronounced him dead, Corrections said.

Minister Ihusan said that CCTV footage from the cell showed that Jameel had been praying in his final moments. The Minister said that the footage will be shared with all concerned authorities who will be looking into the death.
