The Family Court suspended Ahmed Abdulla, the Registrar of Marriage, until April 9.

Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) stated that Abdulla was suspended in connection to an ongoing investigation. DJA has also put together a committee to look into the matter.

Abdulla had previously testified against Chief Judge of the Family Court, Hassan Saeed, in an investigation conducted by Judicial Service Commission (JSC). The commission had suspended Saeed at the time, later revoking the decision in July 2018.

Local media reports that Abdulla also filed an issue concerning Saeed at JSC.

According to the Family Act, the Registrar of Marriage has the discretion to grant approval for a marriage to take place, having considered the person’s physical well-being, competence to maintain a livelihood, and their stated reasons for the union.
