Police have said today that it was through monitoring live security camera footage from cells in Dhoonidhoo Prison that they discovered Adam Athhar attempting to hang himself.

Athhar was arrested for holding a woman hostage on Thursday night, and had been in Dhoonidhoo Prison under remand in custody until the end of trial.

He attempted to take his own life while in custody last night, and is in critical condition, currently receiving treatment on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

Police shared a timeline of the incident today, which states that Athhar was discovered making an attempt on his life at 19:02 hrs yesterday. Officers had immediately entered the cell and carried him down, placing him on the floor. Three minutes later, he was transfered onto a stretcher and taken to the Dhoonidhoo Clinic.

Eight minutes later, at 19:14 hrs he was taken to Male' on a speedboat, with him being transferred to an ambulance at 19:17 hrs and taken to IGMH's emergency treatment unit at 19:25 hrs.

The timeline indicates that Athhar was taken to hospital within 23 minutes of Police discovering him trying to hang himself in his cell.

The timeline, however, does not say when Athhar was last observed safe.

Athhar had taken his partner hostage after police responded to reports of an altercation between them where he was threatening her with a knife. Athhar's partner is a police recruit. He had a knife to her throat when Police attempted to intervene.

As he attempted to make her drive away with him on a motorcycle, Police hit him with a baton as the vehicle paused, causing them to topple over. Police rescued the victim and took Athhar for treatment for injuries sustained. He initially received treatment from ADK Hospital before being taken under arrest.

With complications, he was taken to IGMH for further observation and was once again placed in custody when discharged from the hospital. Police have earlier said that medical tests conducted on Athhar do not indicate any serious injury.
