Reclamation efforts have resumed at Hulhumale' Phase 3 after a hiatus.
Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has contracted this work to Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC). Under this project, a total of 63 hectares of land will be reclaimed.
The project commenced in September last year, with 23 hectares of land reclaimed to date.
Reclamation was temporarily halted due to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA)'s orders following risk of mass coral bleaching in the Maldives' reefs.
The work has now resumed after the EPA has given the go ahead, with efforts now ongoing to reclaim the remaining 40 hectares of land.
HDC has said that the failure to remove some vessels docked in the lagoon in the vicinity would pose difficulties in the progress of reclamation. They called on vessel owners to remove the vessels from the area at the earliest possible.
The project has been handed over to CMCC at a cost of MVR 259.2 million (USD 16.7 million). HDC has previously said that the costs would be covered through the sale of 10 hectares of land from Hulhumale' and 9.8 hectares of land from Thilafushi.
Hulhumale' Phase 3 is being reclaimed to provide land plots to Male' residents under the previous government's Binveriya housing scheme. While 9000 land plots are to be issued to Male' residents, 1000 of these are in Hulhumale' alone.
