The first female Atoll Council President has been elected yesterday at the by-elections held to fill the vacant seat of Faafu Atoll Council President. The seat was won by Hawwa, who had served at the council since before its official inception.
The first female President of an Atoll Council has been elected since Maldives began acting on the Decentralization Act.
Competing on a PNC ticket, Hawwa Abdul Azees of F. Nilandhoo, Fonilunboage, secured the seat of Faafu Atoll Council President in the by-elections yesterday.
Local Governance Minister had corroborated that this is the first female Atoll Council President in the history of the country.
Hawwa has served in the Faafu Atoll council in various administrative roles prior to this significant advancement. A veteran employee, she has been serving at the institute since the year 2000, before the council’s formal inception.
The by-election held to fill the vacant position of Faafu Atoll Council president had found two candidates vying for the position; Ibrahim Haleel of Nilandhoo’s Azum competing on the MDP ticket against Hawwa.
Hawwa had collected a total of 941 votes during yesterday’s by-election with Ibrahim Haleem accumulating 888 votes.
In addition to Faafu Atoll council, elections were held yesterday to elect members for the seats of Vaavu Atoll Felidhoo Council President and Raa Atoll Rasgatheemu Women’s Empowerment Committee’s seat.
While a PNC candidate had secured the position of Felidhoo Council President, an MDP candidate triumphed the Women’s Empowerment Committee seat.
