An elderly man has passed away from swine flu, marking the sixth death in the epidemic spreading across the Maldives.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) disclosed that the man aged 80 passed away last Thursday though they found he had been infected by the H1N1 virus only on Monday. The agency did not provide further details.

According to the statistics published by HPA on Monday, total 546 people have tested for the H1N1 virus out of which 199 people tested positive for swine flu. The report shows that 35 people are currently hospitalised for treatment while 12 people were discharged over the past 48 hours.

HPA’s statistics also indicate that the number of people seeking doctors’ consultation for flu and the common cold are declining across the nation.

The Maldives government has also closed schools again for the remainder of this week after temporarily resuming classes on Sunday and Monday. However, the majority of parents did not send their children to school for fear of contracting the uncontrolled swine flu.
