A fourth person has passed away of swine flu while the number of people testing positive for the H1N1 virus increased again, announced the Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Saturday.

According to HPA’s statistics, total 501 people have tested for swine flu out of which 185 tested positive as of Friday. Four people have died from the disease while the number of people hospitalised has spiked to 31. The statistics show that 12 people had been treated and discharged from hospitals after being treated for swine flu over the past 48 hours.

HPA’s statistics indicate that the swine flu epidemic across the Maldives is still spreading uncontrollably. The agency’s previous statistics released Wednesday reported that 23 people were hospitalised for treatment, which means that an additional eight people were admitted to hospitals within two days. Wthin this period, another nine people had also tested positive to swine flu.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the control of the flu epidemic, the Ministry of Education has decided to open schools and universities starting Sunday. The decision has sparked outcry from parents, many of whom are declaring over media that they will not send their children to school.
