Hulhumale Medical Facility (HMF), developed to provide special medical care to COVID-19 patients, has been empty for three days.

This is the first time HMF has been empty since COVID cases started to surge in Maldives in late April, following the Local Council Elections held on April 10.

HMF has not admitted new patients since the last patient admitted there was released on July 29.

An official from Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) had said that HMF had been empty as of 6:00 pm yesterday. Even though there were no patients at the center, the nurses and other medical staff there were still prepared to aid any patients that require special medical care.

HMF can accommodate 270 patients at full capacity. Maldives saw its biggest wave of COVID cases from April onwards, until the number of daily positives started to decrease in June. When cases dropped in July, the severe restrictions placed in the Greater Male' Area to control the spread of the coronavirus was eased.

Vaccinated people, even if they contract COVID-19, show less severe symptoms. So far, 268,244 people have been fully vaccinated in Maldives. This is over 50 percent of the eligible population.

As per the COVID statistics Health Protection Agency (HPA) releases every day, only 20 COVID patients are being treated while admitted in healthcare facilities in Maldives as of Sunday evening. When COVID cases were at its peak, this number was over 200 on some days.

As of Sunday evening, 115 new cases of COVID-19 was recorded in Maldives. Only 23 new cases were found in the Greater Male' Area.
