COVID-19: Death toll reaches 177 in Maldives

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced that so far 177 people have died from COVID-19 in Maldives.

HPA announced on Thursday the death of a 88 year old Maldivian man admitted in Gaafu Dhaalu COVID Management Facility. He was the 173rd COVID fatality in Maldives.

A 63 year old Maldivan man admitted in Hulhumale' Medical Facility (HMF) had also passed away on Thursday. He was the 174th COVID-19 death.

Three people have passed away from COVID-19 today. They were a a 77 year old Maldivian man that passed away from Dhaalu Bandidhoo, a 37 year old Sri Lankan man that was declared dead when he was brought to IGMH's emergency room and a 77 year old Maldivian woman that was also declared dead when brought to Vilimale Hospital. They were the 175th, 176th, and 177th death respectively.

So far 16 people have passed away due to COVID-19 in June. The highest recorded deaths within a singular month in Maldives are May 2021, at 83 deaths and February 2021, at 10 deaths.

The COVID-19 cases in Maldives spiked in late April in Maldives. To control the rapid spread, the government had put Greater Male' Area in a lockdown on May 26. There has been a decline in positive cases recently, with only 432 people testing positive as of Friday. There were several weeks in May where the daily cases were almost always above 1,000.
