High Court tags eight extremists with MoniCon for one year

The High Court, on Thursday, ordered eight religious extremists to be tagged with MoniCon for one year period.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla requested the order.

Scheduled to expire on May 7, 2021, the High Court's order was issued in response to the probable threat to society based on the type of crimes the individuals are accused of, as well as the evidence submitted against them.

The High Court has instructed that the individuals adhere to the following set of instructions as per sections of Clause 46 and 47 of the 'Prevention of Terrorism Act' as well as Clause 48 to 59.

- Refrain from leaving their residence from 2030 to 0500 hrs and provide information regarding roomates and housemates to the authorities

- Refrain from leaving the Greater Male' Region

- Acquire clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs before travelling abroad for medical purposes

- Refrain from visiting the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale'

- Provide bank account details

- Provide details of all personal assets and allow authorities to inspect property if requested

- Facilitate police entry and inspection of residences

- Provide fingerprint samples in accordance to police requests

- Provide photos of the individuals and their residences in accordance to police requests

- Provide access to communication devices in addition to allowing the monitoring and recording of communications if requested by the home minister

- Present themsleves at a centre determined by the police once a week and provide their signature

- Permit electronic devices on their person or residence in order to monitor their movements

- Co-operate with state requests to participate in social rehabilitation programmes

- The police will conduct inspections to ensure that tagged individuals are acting in accordance to MoniCon regulations

- The police have the right to confiscate possessions

- In the event that the individual is accused of attempting to escape, the police will take adequate steps

A request to extend the order may be submitted if the home minister believes that such a measure is neccesary.

Minister Imran has confirmed that extremists had plotted acts of vandalism and prison unrest while the police prioritise respose efforts concerning the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. However, he assured that successful operations were conducted and that the situation inside prisons was brought under control within a short amount of time.
