Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) granted permission on Thursday for former Minister of Defence and National Security, Mohamed Nazim, to go abroad for medical treatment, upon the request of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Local media Mihaaru reported that HRCM requested to send the jailed for defence minister due to serious issues with Nazim's health. They also reported that MCS is working with Nazim's family to take him abroad on Thursday night.
However, Mihaaru stated that the details of his medical condition and where he is being taken to are yet unknown.
Nazim was sentenced for 11 years by the Criminal Court on March 26, 2015, over illegal weapon possession, after a pistol and three bullets were found in his residence. He lost his appeals at the High Court and Supreme Court as well.
