The governments of Maldives and United Arab Emirates (UAE) yesterday held discussions to potentially fund multiple projects in the Maldives under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.

The discussions took place during a meeting held yesterday between the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund H.E Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi and Foreign Minister of Maldives Moosa Zameer, who is currently on an official trip in the UAE.

In a statement released by Minister Zameer, he said that the discussions were constructive.

“Conveyed appreciation for the generous support and assistance provided by the Government of UAE to the Maldives and discussed further cooperation with the Fund,” he added.

A press release issued by the Foreign Ministry further detailed that Minister Zameer expressed gratitude, in particular, for the support towards the extension of Velana International Airport, noting that it will expand connectivity, leading to increased tourist arrivals and strengthening the resilience of the economy in the Maldives.

He also highlighted the development of Maafaru International Airport project, including the expansion of the airport, adding that it would result in the realization of even more avenues for investment cooperation, the statement read.

During the meeting, Minister Zameer was accompanied by Additional Secretary of the Ministry Shiruzimath Sameer, Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of the Maldives in Abu Dhabi Hassan Waheed, and Counsellor of the Embassy of the Maldives in Abu Dhabi Moomina Ibrahim.
