Ex-VP summoned over Nazim's pistol investigation

Maldives Police Service, last week, summoned former vice president Ahmed Adeeb for questioning over the firearm that was found in the residence of former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, which had landed the latter in jail over illegal weapon’s possession.

Nazim, who serves as the current parliamentary representative for the Dhangethi constituency in Alif Dhaalu Atoll, was convicted after a pistol and three bullets were found in his residence in January 2015. However, the Supreme Court overturned the jail sentence imposed on the former Minister of Defence, on December 2018.

Police had earlier disclosed that arrested former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s DNA was found on the pistol, while neither Nazim's fingerprints nor DNA evidence was found. Adeeb had also expressed his willingness to give his statement in court.

Adeeb previously claimed to be aware of the plot and perpetrators behind the incident and had agreed to expose the truth to the public.

Nazim has denied all accusations against him, maintaining that he had been framed.

Reiterating Nazim's statements, Adeeb denied that the pistol and bullets belonged to Nazim, adding that the former defence minister was unaware of the framing.
