Cases of dengue fever and chikungunya are spiking, with 40 cases of dengue fever and 58 cases of chikungunya reported amid the first four days of May. The most number of reported cases were seen amid April thus far.

Forty cases of dengue fever and fifty eight cases of chikungunya has been reported during the first four days of May.

Cases of dengue fever and chikungunya has been spreading rapidly across all corners of the country.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) stated last night that a total of 660 cases of dengue fever was reported within the span of January to May 4.

Most of these cases were reported on April with 239 individuals contracting dengue fever during this month. Moreover, forty patients of the disease were reported during the first four days of May alone.

Reviewing this information, the location generating the most number of cases was found to be from Hulhumale' City with 142 patients of the dengue fever seeking a doctor at the city while 47 cases were reportedly sought treatments in Male' City. The next location that produced the highest number of dengue patients is Kaafu atoll.

HPA further stated that 240 people had reported cases of chikungunya this year up until May 4. The most number of these patients were recorded between April 28 and May 4. During this time period alone, 117 patients had reportedly contracted the disease and 58 cases were recorded amid the first four days of May.

While the most high risk location for chikungunya is Male' with 193 reported cases from the city, 40 cases of the disease were reported from Hulhumale'.

Precautionary measures from dengue fever

- Block any area that lets in air such as windows, fanlights and open spaces with mosquito nets

- Wear clothes that cover the body as much as possible to prevent mosquito bites

- Habitual use of mosquito repellants such as spray and lotion to prevent mosquito bites

- Eliminate mosquito breeding sites such as areas that store water

Precautionary measures from chikungunya

- Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds

- Habitual use of mosquito repellants such as spray and lotion to prevent mosquito bites

- Wear clothes that cover the body as much as possible to prevent mosquito bites

- Close doors and windows during times when mosquitoes increase

The time frame when mosquito increase the most are mornings and evenings. HPA has urged to practice caution towards mosquito bites at all times to stay safe from mosquito borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.
