Police have said that the individual arrested on Thursday on charges of arson for setting fire and causing damage to a campaign center in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuhfushi was arrested at the airport while he was attempting to flee the country.

Anwar Ali, age 31 years, was arrested on charges of arson for setting fire to a campaign center on the 16th of April. Police have earlier confirmed that he was arrested under a court order.

The targeted campaign center belong to Faruhath Mohamed, the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) candidate who ran for the South Kulhudhuhfushi constituency in the parliamentary election held earlier this month.

At the remand hearing yesterday, police said that Anwar had sought medical treatment for wounds sustained in an other island despite Kulhudhuhfushi, where he was based, having a good standard hospital.

Police further said that Anwar had been at the airport attempting to leave the country after having ignored chits summoning him to the police station. The Police Investigation Officer said that Anwar had even been arrested while he was at the airport, attempting to flee the country.

In his defence, Anwar claimed that he had not left the island with the intention of fleeing. He further claimed that he had been attempting to fly abroad on a trip to get medical treatment for his child.

Criminal Court judged that the arrest had been made according to procedural guidelines, and remanded Anwar in custody for a period of ten days.
