Ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) member for Baarah constituency Ibrahim Shujau has submitted a resolution to the parliament seeking members' opinions on reducing the number of MPs in parliament.

MP Shujau submitted the resolution to seek the opinions of the members of the 20th Parliament on the increase in the number of MPs every five years.

The first reading of the resolution has been placed on the agenda for today's sitting.

Capping the number of MPs is not included in the current administration's legislative agenda. However, since it is a common public belief, the matter will be taken into consideration, said Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla in an earlier interview with Mihaaru News.

While the 18th Parliament had a total of 85 members, this number increased to 87 during the 19th Parliament, and the current 20th Parliament in session has a total of 93 members.

As the number of members increases, the state spends over MVR 82,000 (USD 5,323) per month on each member's salary.
