Ministry of Environment and Energy began conducting a survey into the issue of land erosion plaguing the islands of Addu Atoll, in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Addu City Council revealed that Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo and Meedhoo would be studied in the survey.

In addition to these islands, many uninhabited islands connected by Addu Link Road are facing soil erosion. Some of these islands include Aboohera, Hankede and Gaukedi.

According to the Addu City Council, bi-metric and topographic surveys would be conducted to determine oceanic currents and wave action in the areas undergoing erosion.

Additionally, the research team would be conducting beach surveys and reef surveys to identify the most damaged areas and prepare a report on the findings.

A proposal draft would be submitted based on this report.

The proposal prepared by the survey data will be submitted to Green Climate Fund (GCF) and a final report is scheduled to be submitted by April 2020.

Recently, a project was conducted in Hulhudhoo to solve the soil erosion issue of the island. RR Maldives Private Limited was contracted to complete the MVR 22.6 million project.
