The Parliament's Environment and Climate Change Committee, on Tuesday, declared an emergency meeting over the increase in rates of erosion across the country.

Committee members will convene on January 29, 2020 at 1100 hrs to discuss measures to mitigate increased erosion reported in numerous islands or alleviate the resulting issues.

As per the committee's announcement, members of the public are allowed to attend the meeting to observe proceedings.

Although erosion is typically observed in Maldivian islands during the north-east monsoon, the extent of damage reported recently is unusual. Fainu, Raa Atoll, Dharavandhoo, Baa Atoll and some islands in Haa Alifu Atoll are among the worst affected.

Minister of Environment Dr Hussain Rasheed recently assured that the government would address the matter in response to expressions of concern on social media.
