Construction Ministry fined over EIA violation in Hinnavaru road development

As the project was awarded to RDC by the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry has been imposed a fine of MVR 200,000. The Ministry has been directed to settle the amount within the next 30 days.

The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has levied a fine of MVR 200,000 on the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure for conducting the road development project in Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru in violation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report prepared to evaluate the environmental impact on the area.

EPA stated that work had been carried out on roads that were not included in the concept approved by EPA for road construction and water drainage system in Hinnavaru as outlined in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

EPA said that based on the information exchanged between the Road Development Corporation (RDC) and the agency, EPA was able to confirm that additional roads have been constructed in violation of the EIA in Hinnavaru.

As the project was awarded to RDC by the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry has been imposed a fine of MVR 200,000. The Ministry has been directed to settle the amount within the next 30 days.

The Hinnavaru road development project commenced in 2022 but encountered a prolonged hiatus before resuming in December 2023.
