The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned against dumping garbage on the streets of Malé, Vilimalé, and Hulhumalé.

The EPA said in an announcement that the problem of dumping garbage on the doorsteps and sidewalks of houses is increasing.

Issues identified by the EPA:

- Garbage is taken out on the streets instead of kept indoors, regardless of the time

- Taking garbage out on the street after claiming it was on the instruction of the garbage disposal service employee

- Keeping garbage out on the street to prevent people collecting waste from entering the house

- Worksites keeping garbage on the street

- Furniture waste placed on the street after claiming a high waste collection price for large garbage

The EPA said these practises were in violation of the waste management regulations. There is no reason to leave garbage on the street, and no garbage disposal service employee should ask to do so, the EPA said. "...We urge all parties to continue to manage their waste within the legal framework," the announcement said.

Malé residents have raised concern about garbage bags being left out in the narrow streets and alleys of the city, and in some cases, being left there for several days.
