The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), on Monday, fined the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) with MVR 1,128,750 for illegally disposing of waste in lagoon areas.

According to the agency, the fine was implemented under the Waste Management Regulation (2013/R-58).

WAMCO has been allocated a period of one month to complete the payment.

Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, an official from EPA stated that the agency received reports of waste being discarded in the lagoon during WAMCO's process of transporting garbage from capital Male' and its reclaimed suburb Hulhumale, to the landfill island of Thilafushi.

The official revealed that the fine was only imposed after WAMCO failed to rectify conduct in response to repeated warnings.

At present WAMCO only offers waste disposal services in city areas across Maldives, which consist of Male', and Addu and Fuvahmulah in the south.

Initially established in 2009, WAMCO was operationalised to provide a sustainable waste management solution throughout the country in 2015.
