The Government of Maldives has earned a reported total of over MVR 400 million in Airport Development Fee (ADF).
According to the latest updates shared by the Ministry of Finance, the government had earned twice the amount in ADF so far in 2022 compared to the corresponding period in 2021.
As of the most recent reviewed date, June 30, the government had collected a total of MVR 412.9 million in ADF.
Comparatively, the state had collected MVR 206.9 million in ADF during the same period in the previous year.
Earlier, the 2022 State Budget had projections made for an annual total of MVR 760 million from ADF.
With six months elapsed from the 2022, government has been able to acquire 50 percent of the projected revenue.
Revenue collected from ADF incremented in 2022 owing to the hike in the fees effective from January, levied on outbound travelers from the Maldives.
In December 2021, state discontinued the Airport Service Charge and levied a Departure Tax instead due to which the tax rates increased from outbound expatriates traveling in economy class.
Tax exemptions are granted for individuals with diplomatic immunities, transit passengers and passengers below the age of two.
- Economy Class: USD 12 from Maldivians, USD 30 from expatriates and tourists
- Business Class: USD 60 levied on locals, expatriates and tourists
- First Class: USD 90 levied on locals, expatriates and tourists

Amendments to the Maldives Tax Act places liability on the airlines to pay Airport Development Fees and Departure Tax.
