It is paramount for us to understand how we contribute to the environment while working on thriving businesses and ventures. This does not exclude the tourism industry on a global scale as well.

In the wake of the Covid-19 global pandemic, many travelers are redirecting their travel plans while making newer and fresher adjustments; that is to say that most travelers are consciously choosing destinations that either promote or operate on eco-friendly concepts.

Due to this reason, many travelers are keenly researching places where eco-friendly tourist properties are in abundance and have a long list of such properties from which they can choose while ensuring that their bank balances do not get dented heavily. Here we are looking into some of the cities where eco-friendly or sustainable tourist properties are in comparatively greater numbers than most other places.

1 – Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm is widely considered to be a haven of eco-friendly properties, while on a global scale, it is also the second city with the most sustainable hotels in the world.

The city’s tourism framework heavily leans on becoming a fossil-fuel free economy by 2040 and due to this reason, it is also considered as one of the greenest cities in Europe right now.

What is most interesting is that more than 40 percent of over 200 hotels in the city have received sustainable badges according to the popular travel website; Booking.com.

2 – Lahore, Pakistan

Historic landmarks, people-packed eateries, and manicured parks are all part and parcel of Lahore, which is ideally considered Pakistan’s identity. This vibrant city is rich in culture found at every corner, nook, and cranny while the soaring minarets and beautiful Masjids are popular spots that attract travelers in high numbers.

Lahore is also one of South Asia’s most eco-friendly sites in terms of tourist properties and most of these properties are considerably cheaper than accommodation or lodging found in other South Asian countries.

While more than 500 hotels operate in the city, many of these places have received badges on Booking.com and TripAdvisor for their commitment to sustainable tourism.

3 – Medellin, Columbia

This city is no longer identified as what it once was. A city that was previously overrun by dangerous gangs and cartels has since observed progressive change and growth. Medellin is now a vibrant tourist destination for thrill-seeking travelers who are looking for a culturally rich vacation experience.

The city is ripe with beautiful natural landscapes, hiking trails, and offers several other adventurous activities including zip-lining and horseback riding.

Most of the tourist properties in Medellin have four to five-star user ratings according to TripAdvisor’s latest polls and reviews. Meanwhile, several of these properties do not charge hefty amounts for you to book rooms with them while many of these lavish accommodation blocks and suites bank heavily on eco-friendliness and tourism sustainability.

4 – Vancouver, Canada

Arguably the city with the greatest number of eco-friendly, sustainable properties, Vancouver has been voted as the greenest city in the world in 2021. The city has been widely praised for its strong efforts to reduce carbon footprint and for the increase in its recycling from 40 percent to 60 percent within just a decade.

Most of the tourist properties have significant bans on plastic or non-biodegradable products while some notable properties include Fairmont Waterfront for its excessive push towards recycling.

5 – Maldives

This is an unusual entry since it is not a city but a whole country. However, over the past couple of years, Maldives has become parallel with eco-friendly and sustainable tourism with several top-tier properties launching their own environmentally friendly projects.

Due to Maldives being a tropical, low-lying, and flat country that may face strong climatic repercussions in the coming years, the country’s government has had actively attempted to present the horrors of rising sea levels and the impact of carbon emission on its ecosystem at various international platforms.

The state-backed initiatives and hotelier brands operating in the country have found strong synergy in their commitment towards promoting eco-friendliness which also remains evident with numerous Maldivian resort properties nabbing accolades and awards in recognition of their commitment to this cause.

Recently, a Maldivian tourist resort; Radisson Blu Resort Maldives announced their own coral nursery while Soneva properties are globally known for their eco-friendly tourism concepts.
