Maldives Airports Company (MACL) ordered Thursday to clear the marine vessels in Maldives main airport island Hulhule’s allocated lagoon for reclamation of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA)’s new runway.
In a notice, MACL stated that reclamation of the lagoon north of INIA’s seaplane base will commence in July and that its clearance requires the cooperation of the owners of the vessels which are currently docked in the lagoon. The notice urges owners to remove their vessels by July 10.
MACL also noted that the yachts and other vessels docked in the lagoon has caused a number of dangerous accidents.
The notice further announced that the company will begin closing down the seaplane base at the end of this month to strengthen INIA’s security.
