The St Regis Vommuli Resort, located in Dhaalu Atoll's Velavaru, inaugurated a coral cultivation programme.

Under the ‘Adopt a Coral’ programme, every guest at the resort will receive the opportunity to adopt a coral. A Vommuli correspondent stated that holiday-makers would each have the chance to plant their own adopted corals in the underwater-frame.

Guests will be kept up to date on their corals’ progress every four months before the corals in the framework are relocated. Corals are to be relocated 18 months after planting.

St Regis Vommuli initiated the programme to combat the negative impacts on corals and preserve the reefs in Maldives.

In the past five years, 80 percent of the world’s reefs were destroyed. Experts declared that the reefs will continue to deteriorate as a result of plastic pollution and climate change, unless drastic measures are taken to combat the effects.
