The Vice President of Maldives has emphasized on the importance of environmental sustainability as well as effective commitment towards environmental preservation in the island nation.
On Saturday evening, Mr. Faisal Naseem, the country's Vice President had highlighted on the importance of environmental preservation for the Maldivian people.
During a special ceremony held to commemorate the World Environment Day, at Fuvahmulah City, Mr. Naseem had stressed on the environmental impacts the country faces over climate change and poisonous gas emissions.
He also encouraged the public to adopt the lessons learned during the Covid-19 pandemic while amending the lifestyles towards more environmentally conscious living.
"Due to these reasons, we need to shift our lifestyles, and seek environmentally friendly alternatives or options. For instance while disposing of waste, we must be cautious not to litter the islands or its beaches," Mr. Naseem commented.
In his speech, Mr. Naseem had stressed on the pristine qualities of the island nation and its tropical features being globally renowned.
He noted that it was the responsibility of every Maldivian local to ensure the island nation's pristine qualities are preserved.
While speaking in great length about the environmental impacts of climate change on Maldives, the Vice President had noted on the increasing nature of floods either due to rough oceans or stormy weather; and related it to the economical impacts such as damage on agricultural lands.
Maldives has been at the forefront of actively advocating against environmental impacts due to man-made errors such as air pollution from industrial activities.
The island nation had been very vocal about the harms it, along with several other tropical nations stand to face if the world do not adopt environmentally friendly alternatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"We need to act upon the plans we have made towards environmental sustainability and preservation," Mr. Naseem urged.
While closing his speech, Mr. Naseem encouraged the public to take proactive roles in environmental protection and seeking solutions to combat the impacts faced due to climate change and waste.
