The end-of-year school holidays commenced in Maldives, following the official conclusion of the 2018 academic year on Thursday.

Although some schools handed out report cards earlier this week, the majority of more than 200 schools across the country concluded the final semester of the academic year on Thursday itself.

The principal of the Baa Atoll Education Centre Ahmed Raafeeu stated that 2018 was a successful year and expressed great satisfaction at having reached academic goals.

Rafeeeu commended the great effort expended by teachers and highlighted that the centre held several professional development days in order to provide training sessions for their educators.

The academic year was considered a success with a total of 81,027 students enrolled across the country. Notably, public schools began using tablets in the second semester, fulfilling the Ministry of Education’s plan to digitalise schools.

While the pre-election pledges of recently sworn in President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih focused on education, the 2019 state budget has allocated MVR 3 billion to the education sector.

Some of the pledges include government funding of undergraduate degrees and the provision of breakfast in public schools.

The 2019 academic year is set to commence on February 19.
