Public Service Media (PSM) and Maldives National University (MNU) on Tuesday signed an agreement to host the presidential debates ahead of the election slated for September this year.
Speaking at the ceremony, the state media's Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Ikram declared that a debate on manifestos would also be hosted, in addition to the presidential debate and running mates debate.
The manifesto debate is to be held towards the end of August, while the running mates debate will be held early September, followed by the presidential debate 10 days ahead of the election.
Speaking at the ceremony, MNU's Vice Chancellor Ali Fawaz Shareef stated that their intention was to carry out the debates such that the people can make informed judgements for the election.
"The people would receive all the information they need [to vote] from these debates."
Currently the confirmed presidential candidates are incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim "Ibu" Mohamed Solih from the joint opposition.
President Yameen's running mate is Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the chancellor of Islamic University of Maldives. Meanwhile MP Ibu's running mate is to be appointed during Jumhooree Party's council meeting scheduled for coming Friday.
