The Democrats founder and parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed said that he was confident of securing a first-round victory in the presidential election he had competed on the party's ticket.

Speaking with Mihaaru News, Nasheed said he chose against contending in the election to grant the opportunity to the younger generations.

He highlighted his lengthy career towards political and democratic reform, adding that the younger generation was no longer required to go through the same challenges.

"I do believe in my chances of winning if I had contended," Nasheed said.

The Democrats candidate, Ilyas Labeeb, secured 15,839 votes in the first round, securing the third position.

When asked if the voting outcome would have changed had he contested, Nasheed responded that he did not believe he possessed political authority or influence but chose to uphold certain principles and ideals always.

"I do not believe I ever had such an influence," Nasheed said.

Nasheed acknowledged Ilyas for coming in third in the first round. He commended Ilyas for securing such a result despite being one of the youngest to contend in the election.

"Amid the influence, bribery and corruption, it is commendable that Ilyas secured such a win," Nasheed said.
