Addu City Maradhoo authorities have addressed concerns about sand collection from the newly reclaimed area.

The Maradhoo Town Office has received complaints regarding unauthorized sand collection from the reclaimed area. They said that such activities are prohibited and warned of strict action against violators.

The reclaimed land in Maradhoo is part of the ongoing government-initiated large-scale land reclamation project in Addu City. The project aims to reclaim a total of 76 hectares of land specifically for Maradhoo/Feydhoo. In addition, there are plans to reclaim three islands measuring 8.3 hectares each and two islands measuring 3.3 hectares each from the lagoon surrounding the islands.

Maldives government contracted the land reclamation project to Netherlands’ Van Oord, which first began the reclamation from Maradhoo.

The physical works of the land reclamation project in Addu City commenced in May 2023. The project is being funded through a USD 800 million line of credit provided by the EXIM Bank of India. The project aims to reclaim a total of 194.3 hectares of land in Addu atoll, making it one of the largest reclamation projects in the history of the Maldives.
