The first Maldivian to have tested positive for COVID-19 has recovered.

Speaking at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) press conference held on Sunday, Dr Moosa Murad declared that the first Maldivian to have tested positive for COVID-19 has now recovered, after having tested negative twice.

Maldives confirmed its first case of COVID-19 involving a Maldivian national on March 27, of a 38-year-old male who returned to Maldives from the United Kingdom (UK) on March 22.

With the government’s decision on March 21 to quarantine all passengers travelling to Maldives by air, he was placed under mandatory quarantine at Holiday Island Resort. After exhibiting symptoms for the virus, the individual was tested positive for COVID-19 on March 27.

Three other Maldivians who returned from the UK have also tested positive for the virus.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA), earlier on Sunday, confirmed that a fifth Maldivian who returned from the Philippines had tested positive for COVID-19.

With the first recorded recovery of a Maldivian, four Maldivians now remain positive for COVID-19 in the country, while another Maldivian residing abroad in the UK has tested positive. No local to local transmissions have been recorded till date.

Maldives now has 20 confirmed and six active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 14 recoveries.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 1.78 million people and claimed over 108,800 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 404,400 people have recovered.
