President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Monday that there can be no democracy without an independent media as it is a core element of democratic rule.

"For a democracy to prevail, freedom of expression is essential", said the President-Elect.

Stating that he is well aware of the issues faced by the media, Solih vowed to repeal the contentious Freedom of Speech and Defamation Act within the first 100 days of his presidency.

He also said that in addition to talking about the achievements and services of the government for the people, media should also bring to light the people's concerns regarding the state. He added that the state should facilitate this.
