Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla was appointed as the President of Local Government Authority (LGA) on Sunday.

The Home Ministry revealed that, as per the Decentralization Act, Minister Imran would answer to the parliament on behalf of LGA. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had placed Imran Abdulla on the Local Government Authority’s board recently.

Appointing the Home Minister as the LGA President was observed in past administrations as well. In former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s regime, Minister Azleen Ahmed, who was Home Minister at the time, held the position of LGA President.

The LGA board consists of a minister appointed by the President, a female member specialized in gender equality, a member of Civil Society, an individual with experience in governance or public administration and LGA’s Chief Executive Officer.

The President and Vice President of the board are usually appointed by a vote cast by the members. However, recent amendments to the Decentralization Act now authorizes the President to assign individuals for both positions.
