Police have launched an investigation into allegations against Thooddoo Council's President Ahmed Karam, who is accused of abusing a Thai woman who works in the island.
Police said they were alerted to the alleged abuse of the Thai woman by her sponsor on Thursday. Local reports say she works at a guesthouse owned by Karam.
When contacted for his comments on the matter, Karam said there was some dispute with a former employee. But it was not an attempted sexual assault, as accused of on social media, he said.
According to Karam, it is a case of assault. Police said they are investigating the matter now.
