Police has said today that they have observed an increase in scam cases targeting elderly people.
Most such cases involve the scammers befriending elderly people, and then stealing from them under the guise of assisting them, Police said.
Police said that there has been an increase in numbers of cases reported where people in positions of trust have lured elderly people to places, where they are then forced to give up money.
Police advised caution in such cases, and appealed to elderly persons and their families to be alert to such dangers.
Last year alone, 1661 scam cases were reported, involving MVR 20 million.
From January to July this year, 1302 scam cases have been lodged with Police, they have earlier said.
