Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has criticized the previous government's decision to relocate Center for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) to Hulhumale'.

In his interview to Mihaaru News, the minister said that while the ministry's long-held policy is enhancing equitable opportunities in education, the relocation of CHSE after closing its old building has introduced challenges to students living in Male'.

CHSE has stood as the only institution to provide higher secondary education until A'Level-standard grades were introduced in Villa International High School (VIHS) and Ahmadiyya School.

The outgoing government shifted CHSE to its new building in Hulhumale' after it closed down the original premises situated behind Aminiya School in Male' City.

The minister stressed the importance of a state-run higher secondary school in the Maldives capital. He noted that since the decision has already been made to extend the old CHSE grounds to Aminiya School, the incumbent government will move forward with a decision after an assessment into the issue.

"Hulhumale' population will continue to expand, but this does not warrant for the complete closure of a higher secondary institution from the country's capital," the minister said.

"I strongly believe a higher secondary school should be present in the city."

The minister further underscored the challenges faced by students in traveling back and forth between Male' and Hulhumale' for education.
