National airline of Spain, Iberia, has started direct flights to Maldives on Saturday.

Maldives is the first country in the Indian Ocean that Iberia has started scheduled flights to. Two hundred and eighteen passengers flew to Maldives in the maiden voyage from the airline to the country, all the way from Madrid.

Maldives Airports Company (MACL) had said that Iberia will have three flights to Maldives each week until the end of August, on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays.

Network Development and Airlines Director of Iberia Commercial María Jesús López Solás said their maiden voyage represents a new step for the Maldivian tourism industry and improves the connectivity between Maldives and Southern Europe.

"Iberia Airlines commitment and trust in the Maldives is yet another example of the industrys’ belief that Maldives is one of the safest destinations to travel to right now," she had said in the joint press release by Iberia and MACL.

After Iberia announced the new route to Maldives, the airline has said major tour operators in Spain had designed packages and reserved blocks of seats in their new flights. It is expected that nearly 900 tourists will visit Maldives via Iberia every week.
