The Parliament, on Tuesday, approved the appointment of Mohamed Aslam as the Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

The decision was unanimously greenlit by the 65 MPs that participated in the vote.

All parliamentarians that joined the debate concerning the appointment expressed confidence in Aslam's capability to fulfil the duties of a minister.

His endorsements came from several members within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP) member and parliamentary representative for Dhangethi, Alif Dhaalu Atoll Mohamed Nazim, as well as Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader and parliamentarian for Kaashidhoo, Kaafu Atoll Abdulla Jabir.

During Tuesday's session, the parliament also approved the state's proposal to rename the planning ministry as the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

In addition, parliamentarians voted to task the Government Oversight Committee with designating the ministry's mandates and responsibilities.

These decisions were unanimously approved by the 66 parliamentarians that participated in the vote.

Aslam previously headed the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure prior to the reorganisation of government.

Following Athifa Shakoor’s resignation as the Minister of Housing and Urban Development on June 11, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih dissolved the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and transferred its mandate over to the planning ministry.

In addition to the take over of responsibilities fulfilled by the now-defunct housing ministry, all staff previously employed at the dissolved ministry were transferred to the newly reorganised planning ministry.
