Maldives Immigration has said that Bangladeshi national Arfath Hossain, who was arrested on allegations of selling food products made with cat meat, will be deported after Police conclude their investigation.

Arfath, 32, was taken into custody after allegations arose that he may have been producing and selling food products made out of cat meat after catching and killing stray cats.

After social media videos making this allegation began circulating on social media, Immigration announced that they were searching for him. Arfath went into hiding, but was caught on August 21 while he was at a salon, allegedly attempting to alter his appearance.

Although he was initially taken into custody by Police, he was later transferred to Immigration detention.

With rumours arising that Immigration is set to deport him at present, the authority announced that they would only deport him after Police conclude their investigation into the charges.

In addition to the criminal charges raised against him, Arfath has been living illegally in the country.
